Introduction: The aim of this study is to present an optimization model for the professional development path of football referees from talent identification to achieving international status.
Methods: The present research adopts a qualitative approach using the grounded theory method (Strauss and Corbin's systematic model), and it is fundamental in nature, with data collection conducted through fieldwork. The statistical population includes academic elites, experts, and elites in the field of football refereeing, national and top-tier football referees, and members of the Football Federation's refereeing committee, selected through purposive sampling (20 individuals). Data analysis for open, axial, and selective coding was conducted using the grounded theory approach, and open coding was performed by analyzing interviews.
Results The optimization model for the professional development path of football referees from talent identification to achieving international status is influenced by causal conditions (managerial and educational). Considering extracted strategies (motivation, cultural development, equipment and facilities, and referee training) influenced by contextual conditions (infrastructure, laws and regulations, and the status of refereeing) and intervening conditions (economic, refereeing challenges, talent identification, media, and international factors), one can witness the emergence of internal and external outcomes.
Conclusion: Overall, the professional development of football referees can contribute to the overall development of football and sports. High-quality refereeing can enhance the level of games and attract more spectators and investors.
