Abstract

Introduction: The present study was conducted to determine the role of security and social support in the leisure physical activity of adult women in Tehran.

Methods: An objective-based research approach is applied, utilizing descriptive nature and qualitative research. The statistical population included adult women (19-60 years old) of Tehran. The samples were selected from women who, according to “Sport Organization of Tehran Municipality” report, had engaged in physical activity at their leisure for at least a year. This was to meet the World Health Organization standard of 150 minutes of physical activity per week. The sampling method was first conducted randomly, followed by purposefully continuing until theoretical saturation was reached. Information was collected through 51 individual interviews and 5 focus groups in different areas of Tehran. Interviews were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis approach.

Results: The results indicated that security factors are effective on the amount of leisure physical activity of women in Tehran. It was also found that the amount and type of effective security in women's leisure physical activity in each region is different from other regions. In addition, it was found that increasing the types of social support (emotional, financial, informational and instrumental) increases the amount of leisure physical activity of women.

Conclusion: the government and responsible organizations (such as the municipality and the police) improve the level of women's leisure physical activity by removing security barriers and strengthening various types of social support (such as reducing the tuition fees of sports complexes).
