The Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Team Effectiveness of Male and Female Students participating in the 11th Student Cultural and Sport Olympiad

Abstract
 
Emotions and the intelligence dominant over them play an important role in interpersonal situations. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of emotional intelligence on team effectiveness. The population consisted of those sport teams participating in the 11th sports Olympiad (2012) (N=1952). 322 athletes were selected according to Morgan Table. Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (Sybrya Schering) and Team Effectiveness Questionnaire (Billy Batman and Colin Wilson, 2002) were used. Data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient and independent t test. The results showed a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and effectiveness of participants in team sports (P<0.01). Also, t test results indicated a significant difference between emotional intelligence and effectiveness in boys and girls groups. Self-regulation, one of emotional intelligence components, had the highest relationship with effectiveness.
