Abstract

Participation in sports during childhood—particularly for children living with disabilities—is far more than mere recreation or physical activity; it represents a valuable opportunity for psychological growth, improved quality of life, enhanced social connections, and the flourishing of individual capabilities. In line with this, the present study aimed to identify the key factors influencing parental social support in the sports participation of children with disabilities. To achieve this, a phenomenological research approach was employed. The study population consisted of all parents of children with disabilities in Tabriz who were engaged in sports activities. Due to the large number of potential participants, purposive sampling was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted. After 18 interviews, no new information emerged, and data saturation was reached. All interview transcripts were analyzed and organized using thematic analysis and Maxqda2020 software. The final results revealed six main themes as the key factors influencing parental social support in the sports participation of children with disabilities. These identified themes include: (1) infrastructure and structural support, (2) the role of parents as facilitators, (3) education and cultural development, (4) social interactions and collective participation, (5) psychological and motivational impacts of participation, and (6) the type of sport and pattern of participation. To enable children with disabilities to participate actively and effectively in sports, it is essential that these factors be addressed in a coordinated and comprehensive manner within relevant programs and policies. Such an approach can play a critical role in fostering their growth, empowerment, and overall enhancement of quality of life.
