Abstract
Introduction: In this study, the researchers set out to identify the key factors that drive karate’s global expansion. Their approach drew on the experiences of seasoned athletes who have competed at elite levels and held influential international positions. By capturing these diverse viewpoints, the researchers aimed to illuminate the strategic elements essential for the sport’s ongoing growth worldwide.
Methods: This qualitative study utilized comprehensive, open-ended, and semi-structured interviews to collect data. The participants included federation officials, referees, coaches, top-level athletes, and international medalists, all of whom brought firsthand knowledge from global competitions and administrative roles. The collected data was examined through open and axial coding, which facilitated the systematic identification of recurring themes.
Results: Analysis revealed ten primary components deemed vital for karate’s advancement: governance, management, financial resources, human resources, rules and regulations, talent identification, infrastructure, social attitudes, motivation and appeal, as well as marketing and media. Each of these factors significantly shapes how karate is administered and promoted on a global scale.
Conclusion The findings underscore the importance of cultivating strategic thinking, ensuring stable leadership across federations, and providing advanced training opportunities. Additionally, fully harnessing the sport’s potential and encouraging the involvement of capable young leaders can substantially enhance karate’s standing. Through refinements in governance, operational efficiency, and leadership, karate appears poised to sustain its momentum and extend its global reach.
